NEET PG 2026 Overview
NEET PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test - Postgraduate) is the single entrance exam for admission to postgraduate medical courses in India. It is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). A good NEET PG score is needed to get a seat in MD (Doctor of Medicine), MS (Master of Surgery) and PG Diploma courses across government and private medical colleges.
For 2026, NBEMS has opened the online application window from 1 July 2026. The last date to apply is 21 July 2026. The computer-based exam will be held in a single shift on 30 August 2026, and the result is expected by 30 September 2026.
Eligibility (Who Can Apply)
To apply for NEET PG 2026, a candidate must meet the following conditions:
- Qualification: Passed MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) from a college recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
- Internship: Completed, or will complete, the one-year compulsory rotating internship on or before 30 September 2026.
- Registration: Holds a valid provisional or permanent registration from the NMC or a State Medical Council.
- Age limit: There is no upper age limit for NEET PG 2026.
Foreign medical graduates must also hold a valid FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) pass certificate along with their registration. Always read the official information bulletin for the final eligibility rules before you apply.
NEET PG 2026 Exam Pattern (Revised)
NBEMS has changed the exam pattern for 2026. The number of questions is now 180 (earlier it was 200). The full structure is shown below.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer-based test (CBT), online |
| Language | English only |
| Total questions | 180 multiple-choice questions |
| Total marks | 720 |
| Sections | 5 sections (Group A to Group E), 36 questions each |
| Marking | +4 for a correct answer, -1 for a wrong answer, 0 for unattempted |
| Duration | 3 hours 30 minutes (single shift, 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM) |
Each of the five sections is time-bound. Once the time for a section ends, the system moves to the next section automatically, so plan your speed for each part.
Two Important Changes for 2026
- Choose test states, not cities: Candidates now pick three states for their exam centre instead of choosing cities. The centre is allotted from within your chosen states.
- No first-come-first-served rule: The time at which you submit your form no longer affects your exam centre. Applying early gives no centre advantage, so apply carefully rather than in a rush.

The remaining state quota seats are filled by each state's own counselling authority. MCC counselling is expected to begin around October 2026.
